Chimpanzee Makes Udon!!!

This is our first ever presentation activity for the year. In order to capture every single member's views and ideas into one, we have planned an activity whereby members have to gather in a group to present an interesting topic related to the mathematics and science field.We gathered in the computer room of our school on the first floor of the building with given permission at 2.00 p.m. First group to lay their ideas and presentation was Lim Jia Ni, Loh Sok Cheng,Chong Pei Yi,Sajina,Tan Lee Ting,Elaine Tan.Together , they presented the topic " Animals have talents".From their ideas,it was truly spectatcular that we could all experience this eye-opening truth about animals.It was undeniable that their presentation was something that was fresh,light,interesting, eye catching and creative. They have used various source of information to come up informative,and quite comical with real-life experiences of this furry pets and adventurous creatures.The presentation put us through the message the group tries to convey, it is that Animals Do Have Talent !Here is a link to share of an interesting video that was presented on the day to let everyone have a glimpse of the Wows and OOs that we witnessed !

Coke Can Eruption

I can never forget the baffled faces of Maths n Science Club members when they were asked to open their coke can after shaking it vigorously.Everyone held their cans as far as they could from them-scared that the drink will spurt out.But for our great surprise...the drink did not spurt out.So lets see how does it work.

What You Need
-A fizzy drink

What To Do
First,shake the can vigorously.Then tap on top of the can 15-20 times.Now open the can and you notice that the drink did not spurt out.

How Does it Work
Fizzy drinks are fizzy because they have loads of carbon dioxide dissolved in them under pressure.If you have shaken the drink you will have mixed a whole lot of bubbles into the liquid.These bubbles have already started so if you open the drink immediately,the bubbles can expand rapidly creating foam.The foam is much larger than the can so the drink will spurt out.So by tapping the can it will dislodge the bubbles and therefore less amount of foam is produced.

Balloon Kebab

Its called Balloon Kebab.Anyway it was not eadible but it is a very challenging game.What do you think will happen when a sharp pointy thing meets a balloon-'BANG'.But the most challenging part of this game is to insert a skewer through the balloon without popping it.Amazing right???So now lets see how to do it.

What You Need
-Balloons
-Skewer

What To Do
Insert the skewer through the bottom of the moderate sized balloon,where it is tied off,where the rubber is dark and stretchy.Then try to push it through the very top of the balloon where it is the darkest.So that you have a balloon kebab.

How Does It Work
The darker section around the bottom where the rubber is less taut.This part and the area around the tied end can be penetrated with a sharp object without the balloon popping.In fact,the rubber tightens around the sharp object to keep air from escaping.

Baking Soda Volcano

Well, we didn't really construct the volcano but it was fun all the same! Surely everyone has heard about this experiment right? No? Well, this will shed a little light.

MATERIALS & APPARATUS

~Test tube rack
~Test tube
~Sodium Bicarbonate
~Vinegar

PROCEDURE

1. Sodium bicarbonate is put into the test tube.
2. Vinegar is poured into a beaker.
3. Fill the test tube of sodium bicarbonate with vinegar.
4. Watch as the insides of the test tube begin to foam!
5. Want more action? Close the test tube with your thumb and shake it. Let go and the insides come spurting out!

Note: You might want to do this over a sink because it can get pretty messy.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

This project shows what happens when an acid (vinegar) and a base (baking soda) interact. Chemically, the acid and base neutralize each other, producing carbon dioxide gas as a byproduct. The exact reaction is:

HC2H3O2 (vinegar = acetic acid) + NaHCO3 (baking soda = sodium bicarbonate) = CO2 (carbon dioxide gas) + NaC2H3O2(sodium acetate) + H2O (water)

So, go on try this at home. Who knew chemistry could be so much fun?

Diaper Day

Yup, you read right. It was diaper day for the members today. Lets just say that no one was short of giggling when they saw the diapers. But it turned out the inner workings of a baby diaper were nothing short of fascinating.

MATERIALS & APPARATUS

~A clean diaper
~Beaker
~Scissors
~Water
~A plastic bag

PROCEDURE

1. Cut the portion of the diaper that absorbs moisture.
2. Take the inside lining out of the diaper and place in the plastic bag.
3. Give the plastic bag a vigorous shake or two.
4. After shaking it, you will be able to see granules at the bottom of the plastic bag. Collect the granules and place it inside the beaker. The inside lining of the diaper can be discarded.
5. Add water to the beaker, taking care that you do not add too much.
6. After a few minutes, the granules begin to crystallize.

Note: Discard the crystallized granules into the trash, not the sink.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
The material in the diaper is actually made from sodium polyacrylate, A Super Absorbent. Its nickname is the Super Slurper.

When sodium polyacrylate is exposed to water, the higher concentration of water outside the polymer than inside (lower sodium and polyacrylate solute concentration) draws the water into the center of the molecule via osmosis. Sodium polyacrylate will continue to absorb water until there is an equal concentration of water inside and outside the polymer.

It is used in baby diapers to keep baby bottoms dry. It is also a more convenient way to provide water to animals during transportation. The water soaked polymer crystals won't spill and animals can eat them to get water. Another common use is a soil substitute.

PI PI MATHEMATICAL PI!!!

Hi everyone! It's been long since I last posted!! Sorry for neglecting the blog for a couple of months!!!

Well, I was browsing through some information about Pi Day (Yes, we might be celebrating it... I HOPE!!!) when I stumbled upon an interesting song called the "Pi Pi Mathematical Pi" song... It's rather catchy... Hahax! It's kind of cute, funny but at the same time rather meaningful...

Well this kind of Pi is different than most,
It hasn't got berries,
ain't spread on toast,
And that's how it's always been,
We keep extending its decimal places,

But we'll never reach the end,S
o why the fascination with,
A number whose end is just a myth?Whence the adulation,
For mental masturbation,
It might have something to do with the stars,
To calculate distances from afar,
But that's just a guess 'bout the way things are,

Farewell Party 2009

It was a great event for the Math and Science members ! The annual farewell party was held in the hall along with 12 members present. The event was kicked off with food. Fried Vermicelli , Fried Chicken seasoned with erbs , Malay Stuffed Tofu , "Air Bandung" which was given a twist with a mixture of FN Ice Cream Soda, "Dadih" (Puding with a mixture of canned fruits and milk),Curry puff with pleasant layout of the table. The extra food were packed and brought back by everyone.An orchid plant was presented as a gift to our society's teacher-in-charge Mrs.Lee.The caterers cleared the place up and we left at 3.35p.m.We truly enjoyed ourselves.

A Warm Thank You

A warm thank you to the Form 5 and Form 4 Mathematics and Science Society 2009members who participated in this year's activities and discussion as well as those who lend a hand in bringing the club to greater heights and as well as contributing the wonderful thougths and ideas which was brought up during our meetings .Our farewell party 2009 will be held most probably after the SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia )2009 trials Examination.Wishing all the Form 5 members good luck and all the best in their examination as well as in their future challenges in life . In addition , we always hope and try our best to bringing the Mathematics and Science Society to even greater heights .

Mathematics 13 facts

1) 1 googol = 10100;
1 googolplex = 10googol = 1010100 .

2) 1089 multiplied by 9 gives an exact reverse: 9801.

3) From 0 to 1,000, the letter "A" only appears in 1,000 ("one thousand").
2 is called the "oddest" Even Prime-number. 2 is a unique Even Prime because all Even-numbers are divisible by 2. But any number apart from 2 that is divisible by 2, is not a Prime. Sciensational.com

Our society conducted an activty called ' Inventors of the day '. Members was explained to the rules and themes provided . Each member was given an A4 size paper . The members was asked to draw and describe their invention based on the following themes :

a) Create an organism and describe it's features .
b) Create an invention which could help lessen mankind's burden .
c) Create the ultimate 'fruit'.
d) Create an new organ in the human body .
e) Create a new mathematical game .

The members were very participative and all in all put a good spirit of the ideas .

Plastic Milk Experiment

Our club did an experiment called the ' Plastic Milk ' . This experiment was particpated by the society members according to a procedure on the experiment . The experiment was held in the Biology Lab in our school and referring to the procedures as below :

PLASTIC MILK

One cup of milk
4 teaspoons of white vinegar
A bowl
A strainer
Adult help

Ask your friendly adult to heat up the milk until it is hot, but not boiling
Now ask the adult to carefully pour the milk into the bowl
Add the vinegar to the milk and stir it up with a spoon for about a minute
Now the fun part, pour the milk through the strainer into the sink - careful it may be hot!
Left behind in the strainer is a mass of lumpy blobs.
When it is cool enough, you can rinse the blobs off in water while you press them together .
Now just mold it into a shape and it will harden in a few days. - Cool!

Plastic? In milk? Well, sort of. You made a substance called CASIN. It's from the latin word meaning "cheese." Casin occurs when the protien in the milk meets the acid in the vinegar. The casin in milk does not mix with the acid and so it forms blobs. True plastics, called poymers, are a little different. THE WORLD’S EASIEST LAVA LAMP!

MATERIALS & APPARATUS
  • ~A clean 1 liter clear soda bottle
    ~3/4 cup of water
    ~Vegetable Oil
    ~Fizzing tablets (such as Alka Seltzer)
    ~Food colouring

PROCEDURE
1. Pour the water into the bottle.

2. Use a measuring cup or funnel to slowly pour the vegetable oil into the bottle until it's almost full. You may have to wait a few minutes for the oil and water separate.

3. Add 10 drops of food coloring to the bottle (we like red, but any color will look great.) The drops will pass through the oil and then mix with the water below.

4. Break a seltzer tablet in half and drop the half tablet into the bottle. Watch it sink to the bottom and let the blobby greatness begin!

5. To keep the effect going, just add another tablet piece. For a true lava lamp effect, shine a flashlight through the bottom of the bottle.


HOW DOES IT WORK?
To begin, the oil stays above the water because the oil is lighter than the water or, more specifically, less dense than water. The oil and water do not mix because of something called "intermolecular polarity." That term is fun to bring up in dinner conversation. When you added the tablet piece, it sank to the bottom and started dissolving and creating a gas. As the gas bubbles rose, they took some of the colored water with them. When the blob of water reached the top, the gas escaped and down went the water. Cool, huh? By the way, you can store your "Blobs In A Bottle" with the cap on, and then anytime you want to bring it back to life, just add another tablet piece.

The project above is a DEMONSTRATION. To make it a true experiment, you can try to answer these questions:


1. Does the temperature of the water affect the reaction?

2. Does the size of the bottle affect how many blobs are produced?

3. Does the effect still work if the cap is put on the bottle?

4. Does the size of the tablet pieces affect the number of blobs created?
